The Best Dog Food For Pitbull Puppies

Introduction to puppies

Ah, puppies. Who doesn’t love them? These adorable four-legged creatures have been making our hearts melt ever since. In fact, we are so fond of puppies that we spend time looking at hundreds of puppy videos during our spare time, and more often than not, we think about our dream puppy, the one that we will choose to bring home and make a good family companion.

However, while almost everyone wants to have a puppy, not all are fully up to the task of having one. You don’t get a puppy if you only want something you can play with. After all, it’s a living, breathing creature that requires a great deal of care and attention.

As a pet owner, what should be the first on the effective dog care list? Feeding your dog with the best dog food for pitbull puppies, of course! While knowing that you need to feed your puppy is a no-brainer, looking for what to feed your puppy is a difficult task.

Should you be an owner of a dog who recently had puppies, then the best thing to do is to let the newborn feed on his mother’s milk until he is of the right age to eat his first dry kibble. However, should you be someone who just brought an adorable little pup home, the first thing you should do is to choose the best dog food for lab puppies appropriate for the age.

If you are a new owner of a cute puppy, the ideal age is around three months old to ensure that you can sustain his nutritional needs without the mother. Getting a newborn or weaning puppy will not be appropriate because he has a lesser chance of surviving due to malnutrition and susceptibility to newborn illnesses. So, it is important to know that no puppy should be re-homed if it is less than two months old.

Puppy’s Nutritional Needs

A dog’s dietary needs are on their most vital and delicate during the juvenile stage. One wrong move in your puppy’s diet and it will dictate your dog’s overall health when he becomes an adult.

In a dog’s life, the puppy stage is when he is most active, playful, and energetic, thus making this stage the neediest when it comes to the essential vitamins and nutrients. To begin with, a puppy’s nutritional needs vary depending on its physique, weight, and activity level.

However, it is common knowledge that puppies need a well-balanced diet in order to be healthy. For a more comprehensive list of a puppy’s dietary needs, here are the things they should have if you get a hold of the best puppy dog food there is.

  • Animal protein – Animal-based protein is the best protein source for your puppies. While plant-based protein may be a good building block source, too, it is better to go for lean meat protein, such as beef, turkey, chicken, and salmon, rather than potatoes and grains. Essentially, puppies require 22% to 28% of protein in their diet, which is way more than the adult and senior requirement. This is mainly because puppies need more nutrition to build bones and muscles and develop their organs.
  • Healthy fats This is the second most required nutrient for dogs. Fat is a macronutrient, just like protein. This means that it is a good source or energy and can help in absorbing certain vitamins and minerals. Furthermore, fats found in dog food make the meal tasty and appealing to our puppies. Omega-3 acids, such as DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) support brain development and proper eyesight. Fat also is responsible for preventing inflammation and skin problems. The maximum fat requirement for puppies is 8%, while in adult dogs, it should be just 5%.
  • Digestible carbohydrates Carbohydrates are also an integral part of your puppy’s diet as it is a prime source of energy. However, the carb requirements of puppies are relatively low and should be highly soluble and complex. Corn and other grains should be eliminated, and other healthier alternatives, such as oats, potatoes, and peas, should be included.
  • Essential vitamins and minerals Of course, vitamins and minerals are important as well. Calcium, vitamin B, and vitamin E are all essential to the healthy growth of your puppy and also help in developing the brain activity and organs of your pooch.

Feeding your puppy

If you think feeding a puppy is easy, then you are gravely misinformed. All pet owners can attest to how many questions they asked themselves and their fellow fur parents regarding the what, when, how, and why of dog feeding. So for starters, we laid out a definitive guideline on feeding your pups according to size, weight, and age.

Consequently, here are the other important details you should not miss out when feeding your puppy:

  • Access to water Water is an integral part of puppies’ health as they are very active. Their body requires an ample amount of water to stay hydrated and to maintain a healthy coat. Their access to water should be absolute, and there should be a ready container for them to drink from.
  • Where to feed The feeding station of your puppies should be clean and dry. Consequently, the bowls should be thoroughly cleansed.
  • Feeding schedule Feeding should not be done shortly before or after a strenuous activity. There should also be an ample amount of time for your puppy’s body to process the food before the next scheduled meal. The gap between meals is ideally four to five hours.

Choosing the best puppy food

When choosing the best puppy food, you should be looking at the list of ingredients. Here’s a guide to the notable things you should find on a puppy dog food label:

  • Natural ingredients
  • Whole meat and whole grain
  • No preservatives, no food dye, and no by-products
  • Essential fats from a labeled source
  • Fruits and vegetables (mostly antioxidants and vitamins sources)
  • AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) approved and labelled as “All Life Stages”

Wet or Dry Dog Food?

If finding the best dog food for lab puppies is already a struggle in itself, then you have to know that you would also be presented with a question on whether to give your puppy wet or dry dog food. To ease your pain of choosing between wet and dry dog food, we laid out the basic description, advantages, and disadvantages of each variant.

Wet Food

Often packaged in cans, wet dog food is more expensive than dry dog food. It is composed of usually meat, grains, fruits and vegetables soaked in a sauce which either can be gravy, vegetable broth or meat stew. Wet dog food often comes in packs of six or twelve and would normally cost twice or thrice the price of dry dog food. One can normally equates to one meal, which means you need to buy a lot of it to meet your puppy’s growing appetite.

Advantages

  • Tastier and more appetizing. Your puppy will be more inclined to eat wet dog food. This is perfect for pups that are picky eaters.
  • Less processed and fewer preservatives. Meat and protein sources closely resemble those of freshly made food.
  • Wet dog food contains more water, making it more hydrating than dry dog food.

Disadvantages

  • Short shelf-life if the can is left open or if food is in the tray and left uneaten.
  • Wet dog foods may contain more sodium and does not guarantee the absence of preservatives.
  • More expensive and will make your dog more picky.
  • Messy and will cause a stain on your dog’s face.

Dry Food

The more popular and budget-friendly option, dry food can also be called kibble. It is dry, and each kibble is packed with flavor. Kibbles are crunchy and have a distinct, meaty smell. This type of dog food normally comes in big bags and can be stored in bins. It is also easy to portion and divide in multiple food bowls.

Advantages

  • More convenient and budget-friendly. One bag of kibble goes a long way, unlike one can of wet dog food.
  • Easy to store and pack. When travelling with your dogs, dry dog food is the best as you can bring it anywhere, and it will not spoil easily.
  • Dry and crunchy texture supports dental hygiene and health. It promotes stronger teeth and jaw. It is also less messy to eat.
  • Dry dog food is denser in protein and all necessary ingredients than wet dog food.

Disadvantages

  • Kibbles may be harder to chew, and some puppies may find it unappetizing.
  • If dry dog food is low in quality, it may contain more preservatives and flavorings, which may cause sensitivities.
  • Does not provide moisture and a water source for your dogs.

What should you get then? First, you must consult your local vet if you are completely unsure of what to food to get for your dogs. As a suggestion, you can lay out a budget and a plan for feeding your puppy. If you are on a budget, then you must go for the dry dog food. Kibbles can be easier to manage for new pet owners and will not cost too much.

If your puppy won’t eat the kibbles, you may want to switch to the wet dog food. However, you need to understand that once your dog grows accustomed to eating a more palatable and tastier wet dog food, it will be hard to make him eat dry dog food and treats. In the long run, this would make him picky.
